The announcement occurs after Giuliani was injured in a New Hampshire car accident during the weekend. In the announcement, Trump praised Giuliani’s service as mayor, which was executed from 1994 to 2001.

“As president of the United States of America, I am pleased to announce that Rudy Giuliani, the largest mayor of the history of New York City and an equally large American patriot, will receive the presidential medal of La Libertad, the highest civil honor of our country. Details about the time and place to follow,” Trump wrote on his social media platform.

Giuliani is out of the hospital and in a good mood, someone familiar with his condition told ABC News. He remains in New Hampshire, they said.

Ted Goodman, the assistant of Giuliani who was driving the Ford Bronco involved in the accident, responded to Trump’s announcement with a statement.

“There is no more worthy of this honor. Mayor Rudy Giuliani knocked down the mafia, saved New York City, consoled the nation after September 11 and served in innumerable other ways to improve the lives of others,” he said. “Thank you, President Trump, for honoring his life and his legacy.”
