1 dead, 6 wounded after a gun man opens fire against the sidewalk of Minneapolis: 'Harming and unacceptable'

An armed man opened fire with a high speed rifle in a group standing on a sidewalk in Minneapolis on Tuesday, killing a person and hurting six others, police said.

At least one of the seven victims seems to have been the goal of the shooting, according to the Minneapolis police chief Brian O’Hara, who described the incident “deeply worrying.”

“This level of fire power unleashed in broad daylight is completely disgusting and unacceptable,” O’Hara said during a press conference on Tuesday.

The gunman fled in a vehicle and remains in general, said the boss. The authorities are working to identify the suspect, he said.

The victims had stopped in a group on a sidewalk on the other side of the street of a Catholic high school, according to the police chief.

The Minneapolis police responded to the scene after receiving a notification of the Shotspotter shooting detection system around 1:30 pm on Tuesday that approximately 30 rounds of shots had shot, O’Hara said.

The officers who responded found a dead man on the scene and six other shooting victims in the area, including local companies, he said.

According to Shotspotter notification and “significant” injuries suffered by the victims, the police believe that a high speed rifle was used in the shooting, O’Hara said.

“The damage made to the bodies of some of these victims is indescribable,” O’Hara said. “Fortunately, we have no more people dead for this incident.”

The six people injured in the shooting are expected to survive, he said. It is believed that all victims are adults.

Police believe that there is only one shooter, and that at least one person stopped in the group was “clearly attacked,” said O’Hara.

The shooter shot while standing at the corner about 15 meters from the group, then fled in a vehicle, he said.

Some vehicles parked in the area were also damaged in the shooting.

The police chief urged anyone with information to be presented.

“We are doing everything possible to identify those responsible for this violence,” he said.
