The hungry determined in parts of Gaza, 500,000 experimenting 'catastrophic' hunger: report

The famine has been determined in the Gaza Governorate, where the city of Gaza is located, according to a warning issued Friday by the integrated Food Security phase (CPI).

The IPC report, a global initiative that monitors hunger with the support of governments, the United Nations and non-governmental organizations, the projected famine would expand to the Government of Deir Al-Balah, in the center of Gaza and the Governorate of Khan Youis, in the south of Gaza, at the end of September.

The CPI itself does not issue official famine statements, but its findings can inform governments and agencies such as the UN to make a famine statement.

The report also found that more than half a million people in the Gaza strip face conditions of phase 5, which are characterized as catastrophic levels of food insecurity. Around 1.07 million people, 54% of the population, face phase 4 conditions, characterized as emergency levels of food insecurity.

Between mid -August and the end of September 2025, almost a third of the population, almost 641,000 people, is expected to face catastrophic conditions of phase 5 and the number of people who face emergency levels will probably increase to 1.14 million, according to the report.

The IPC report stated that, given the inability to classify the North Gaza due to the barriers that reach the area, the figures in the report are a underestimation. Estimates also exclude any remaining population in Rafah, in southern Gaza, because it is mostly uninhabited, according to the CPI.

The food crisis in Gaza has worsened since the high fire between Israel and Hamas ended in March and Israel instituted a blockade in help to Gaza. A growing number of deaths has also been informed due to malnutrition and heartbreaking images of suffering children and long food lines have emerged.
